Shadow education secretary Theresa May couldn’t “re-professionalise” teaching (“No sense to hollow pledges”, Opinion, TES, May 18), even if it were necessary.
People are professional by virtue of their knowledge, competence, and attitude. The high numbers passing the performance threshold and other evidence suggest a highly competent profession.
More than 80 per cent of the public believe teachers “do a good job”, despite more than two decades of negative spin. The idea that teachers need politicians to bestow credibility on them is more a tribute to the ego of the political classes than a comment on teachers.
