Potter time is short

The Diary is pleased that the Government is showing concern for sensitive journalists. At the launch yesterday of what was billed as a harrowing report by government inspectors on the protection of vulnerable children, the hacks were to be offered coffee and “comfort food”.

No reports of the food on offer when 70 voracious cub journalists (aged 8 to 16) invade Edinburgh Castle for their prize press conference with JK Rowling on Sunday. A Hogwarts-style hearty roast dinner? But the children will have to keep their questions snappy. Publishers, Bloomsbury, have scheduled just an hour for the event. Seventy into 60 goes - less than one minute each.
