Pounds 3bn Budget plea

Britain’s trade union chiefs are the first to set a marker for the next public expenditure round with a call for a Pounds 3 billion boost to education and training spending in the autumn Budget. John Monks, TUC general secretary, called for a Pounds 1.4 billion back-to-work scheme for the long-term unemployed, Pounds 1 bn on community projects, an extra Pounds 150 million on training programmes and a restoration of entitlement to 12 months unemployment benefits.
