Power of the Prom

The front page of The TES in November 1975 called the first Schools Prom “a triumph for the nation’s teachers”. What was true then is no less so today, writes Bob Doe, editor of The TES.

The Schools Prom, organised by Music for Youth, involves 30 school, county and youth groups on three consecutive nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall. But it is the culmination of a year of music-making by thousands of children in schools and at festivals and concerts all over the UK. It is a breathtaking experience; the excitement and enthusiasm these young musicians evoke is overwhelming.

The TES sponsored that first Prom to show our support for schools music, and we are proud to continue to sponsor the ultimate showpiece of youth music.
