Look closely at some video replays of some of the Paralympic events to identify how an activity has been adapted to allow disabled participants to compete. What has been changed in them? And what has stayed the same?

View some of the special events such as Boccia or Goalball. Write a short introduction to the game for those new to the sport. Write a list of clear instructions and rules.

Investigate how the Games have changed since 1948. When were new events introduced? Use graphs and tables to show how paralympic records have improved. How does the rate of improvement compare to the main Olympics?

Contact some local sporting associations for the disabled. Many are very keen to become involved in school. (My own Year 6 pupils were recently given the most marvellous tennis coaching by two wheelchair-bound players.) Use the biographies of some disabled athletes to identify the challenges they have overcome. What has made them so determined to succeed? Get each member of the class to set their own very challenging physical target.

Organise activities that can help support the necessary improvement.

Design some posters to advertise the Games. Use language and artwork very carefully in a way that will inform the public, encourage attendance and give a positive message.

Other organisations have to adapt their facilities to ensure that those with a disability can participate fully. Supermarkets have special trolleys and checkouts, schools select colour schemes carefully and provide individual support. Investigate changes that are made in different organisations to allow real inclusion to take place.
