A private insight

It was interesting to read James Kennedy’s account of the differences between teaching in maintained and independent schools (“Comparisons across the great divide”, Comment, 22 March).

He gave a clear sense of the culture and flavour of “A-grade” independents and it was a welcome change to read a positive account from someone who has experienced both sectors. It is the wide-ranging high expectations of the private sector that parents are willing to pay for, not the old school tie.
