Pupils who have no pals

More than half of all children start school without the communication skills to learn and make friends, according to speech charity I CAN.

A report released by the charity this week said children with “impoverished” speech and language skills often suffered low academic achievement, social exclusion and were more likely to get into crime.

Failure to provide immediate therapy could result in society paying up to pound;26 billion in benefits, extra training and the criminal justice system .
