Raise attainment levels for all

30th August 1996, 1:00am
Once again, media attention is focused on those young people who have achieved grades A-C in their GCSEs.

Although the number shows a marginal increase each year when the results are analysed (0.2per cent between 1993-94 and 1994-95), the number of young people who fail to achieve even one grade G is rising at twice that rate, (0.4 per cent between 1993-94 and 1994-95). They comprise more than 15 per cent of all school-leavers.

We now need to concentrate on raising attainment levels for all young people and ensure that those who struggle to achieve are given the support, encouragement and resources they need to reach their full potential. Only then can the politicians claim a victory for British education.
