Reaching for the stars

(Photograph) - Reaching for the stars: Jacky Blackmore, one of six regional winners in the TES Primary Teacher of Science award scheme, uses drama, songs and hands-on activities to lead pupils with moderate learning difficulties into scientific discovery.

Along with the other finalists, Mrs Blackmore, who is science co-ordinator at The Vines Primary School in Wandsworth, south London, has won Pounds 100 for both her school and herself. The scheme, set up to promote good science teaching and spread good practice, is run in association with the Association for Science Education and sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The other winners are: Stuart Ball, Llantillio Pertholey primary in Abergavenny; Jo Powell, Woodlands junior school in Tonbridge, Kent; Patricia Szczesniak, Goldington middle school, Bedford; Lindsey Watkins, Pentrepoeth primary in Newport, Gwent, and Wendy Tyler, Alleyn’s junior school in Dulwich. The national winner is to be named at the Association for Science Education annual meeting in Liverpool on January 9. The prize is Pounds 500 for the teacher and Pounds 300 for the school.
