Which country was the location for the film of JRR Tolkien’s famous trilogy? Pupils who know nity to win cash prizes. The best-performing British team will be offered an all-expenses-paid trip to Auckland next summer to compete in the New Zealand final.

Anne Ingham, English teacher at Ovingham middle school, in Northumberland, is encouraging her pupils to enter. She said: “Reading can be a very isolated experience. But when they are working as a team, children exchange ideas and recommend books to each other, because they have a common goal.”

Jonathan Bunn, 12, says the competition allows school bookworms to achieve a level of social status usually reserved for successful sports players.

He said: “My friends think reading is a bit boring. But when I said I could win a trip to New Zealand, they were jealous of me. I felt pleased with myself.”
