Rebuild riposte

15th January 2010, 12:00am

Richard Vaughan did a good job writing about the Building Schools for the Future rebuild for Knowsley secondaries. He managed to escape the usual sanitised case-study reporting much beloved in education (“The neglected Merseyside suburb that became a new build beacon”, January 8).

Many queries remain. Will pupils continue to transfer into other areas? How can the buildings support improvements in GCSEs? In one of the buildings I visited, storage was clearly a problem, but the formal response to my queries was to dismiss them.

Those of us who live and work in the borough want the best for our young people. But it will take time and a degree of honesty, which is sometimes missing.
