Rise of the go-betweens

The number of employee disputes in academies south of the border is so severe that the involvement of the arbitration service Acas has risen four-fold. Last year, Acas was called in to mediate in 38 cases; the previous year it was 10. Heads attribute the rise to the growth of the academies programme, and the fact that when schools convert to academy status, they lose services previously offered by the local authority.
