Role of history

What kind of role does history have in young people’s education? Does it receive adequate time in the Scottish curriculum or has the balance shifted too far in the direction of skills and away from developing a knowledge of the past?

These and other questions are addressed in Hitory Education in Scotland, a new book by Peter Hillis of the department of social studies education at the University of Strathclyde. The book, with chapters by Scottish history teachers and lecturers, is published by John Donald Publishers, Edinburgh (pound;12.99 paperback).
