A SERIES of picture books targeted at young black readers is now in print with help from the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers.

The latest titles from Tamarind, a small independent multicultural publisher, feature top children’s writers such as Malorie Blackman and Vivian French, with black children as central characters. The union has invested pound;75,000 in the books as a National Year of Reading project.

The NASUWT is also among the sponsors of a free literacy guide which will shortly be sent to schools. The National Literacy Association’s 1999 Guide to Literacy Resources lists books, software and materials from reception to key stage 3 which have been approved by a quality control panel of teachers and reading advisers.
