The success of the Bell Lawrie White Scottish Schools Rugby Cup contest in recent years has prompted calls for a national schools league.
Initial discussions have been held and up to four leagues could be introduced but plans are still at an embryonic stage.
The competition has just completed its 20th year but it has only taken off in the past two or three, with ever more state schools taking part. It attracted a record 87 schools this year, up from 56 two years ago. More than 5,000 fans have attended the past three finals, including this month’s when Dollar Academy retained the cup by beating Dundee High 27-14 at Murrayfield.
John Barclay, Mark Nelson and Scott Borrowman all scored tries for Dollar Academy. Graham Wilson converted all three and kicked two penalties.
Dundee’s two tries came from Richard Vernon and Jamie Bell.
