Science - Resource of the week - Time for reflection

24th August 2012, 1:00am

TES science adviser Alessio Bernadelli brightens up Assessment for Learning with a PowerPoint based around a grid of six coloured squares - one blue, two red and three green - arranged in a triangle.

In the blue box at the top, pupils write one thing they do not understand and explain why they are unsure. In the red boxes they write two things they have understood and then discuss with their classmates how they learned them. In the three green boxes they write what they already knew about the topic before the lesson and explain when and how they learned this.

Rather than simply stating what they have and have not understood, the reflection grid encourages pupils to think about how they learn. The final discussion helps you understand their prior knowledge and how they engage with the subject outside class.
