David Purves, of the Scots Language Society, demanded an end to the “psychological damage” to 4 and 5-year-olds told to drop their native tongue.
“Before 1603 everyone spoke Scots or Gaelic. Now we have a Scottish version of English,” he said. He added that Scots should be taught in schools as a separate linguistic system close to English.
