Maths and science teachers are being urged to respond to questionnaires which will be sent out as part of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Survey 2007.
The survey will take place in selected primary and secondary schools in Scotland from April 18-May 31. The National Foundation for Educational Research, conducting the study on behalf of the Scottish Executive, will send out its questionnaires before then.
TIMSS is seen as an important study which allows Scotland to benchmark its performance against other countries, and contributes to the Assessment is for Learning agenda. TIMSS 2003 showed that S2 pupils performed above the international average in maths while P5s performed at the average level. P5 and S2 pupils performed above the international average in science. Schools will receive data on individual pupils’ attitudes towards mathematics and science compared to the national average.
