Schoolchildren in Hull are happy slapping from an early age.
One wonders what the manufacturers of “slappits” were thinking when they named the reflective wraparound metallic bands.
Children can slap them on to their arms, making them visible to motorists up to 300 yards away.
Unfortunately, slapping has another less attractive meaning in playground parlance.
Nevertheless, Endike Primary in Hull has used a grant from the Department for Children, Schools and Families to fit out its 285 pupils with slappits.
Sue Boyeson, Hull city council’s road safety officer, said the visibility bands would help children stay safe as they travelled to and from school on dark winter days.
One hopes the council clearly explains the combination of children, slapping and dark streets to local pensioners of a nervous disposition.
