So farewell then...

It’s that time of year. George MacBride, the legendary education convener of the Educational Institute of Scotland, is retiring from his support for learning post at Govan High in Glasgow, as we exclusively revealed last week. But he remains in his union post for another year.

MacBride will not be intellect-ually idle as he is moving into academia.

University life should suit MacBride. When interviewed for the EIS general secretary’s job by the seething cauldron that was the union’s general council, only to be defeated by Ronnie Smith, he was asked whether he was “too cerebral” to become union supremo.

“I’ll have to think about that,” he replied.
