As new students arrive at university, is there evidence of dumbing down of standards? The guide for medical entrants to Glasgow states: “Preparation before you arrive is voluntary, but could include watching episodes of ER, Casualty, Peak Practice, Chicago Hope, Cardiac Arrest, Dr Findlay or the like.”

Instructions for their residential weekend conclude: “The aim is to help students bond with their classmates by interacting in a different setting while exploring themselves as individuals, their interaction and functioning in groups and the intellectual paradigms which have shaped their lives to date and will influence their futures.”

Where does that leave bevvying?
