SOCRATES, the European Union’s main education programme, has won funding for a further seven years.

The scheme, which has benefited around 500,000 young people since 1995, was in danger of collapse after some member states - principally the UK - opposed an increase in funding. It will now receive 1.85 billion euros (approx pound;1.2bn). The new programme concentrates on life-long learning and technology.
