It was possibly the shortest-running story ever. “Fee-paying schools put at risk,” the Scotsman told us in its front page lead last Tuesday. By Thursday, buried inside, this had become “Threat to private education ends”.

The following day the council issued a press statement to inform us that “the Perth and Kinross Independent Education Partnership will next week meet to discuss the possibility of independent schools losing their charitable status in Scotland”. That could be the shortest meeting ever.
