One solution is to divert the reconditioned machines from industry being aimed at schools, writes Merlin John. These could be used by students at home, according to the British Educational Suppliers Association.

“We are increasingly worried by the chasm between the haves and have-nots,” said chief executive Dominic Savage. “After-school clubs and provision in libraries will help, but there is nothing to compare with access in a child’s own home where parents can help and there are no time constraints to dampen enthusiasm.”
