Parents of pupils at St Aloysius’ College in Glasgow (fees pound;6,700 per year) are celebrating scooping the prestigious pound;25,000 Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland award for the school’s Clavius building.
Parents, who include at least one HMI, a couple of heidies and several deputes in the state sector, can rest assured that they are getting value for money, a sentiment reinforced by RIAS president Gordon Murrary.
The Clavius building’s high level of finish was in contrast to the public private partnership piles being built in the state sector, Mr Murrary said.
Ouch.
But it took an architect educated at a state school to put it all in perspective. Tom Elder, of Elder and Canon, the partnership that designed the building, told a neighbour congratulating him on the award: “Well, it did take a Holyrood Secondary School boy to put it all together.”
