My Year 2 class was investigating words with the phoneme “ur”. They compiled lists and put the words into sentences. One girl spent a long time trying to read the word “turkey”. Eventually her neighbour helped her out. She then approached me, still frowning: “Is it the chicken you eat, or the chicken the country?” ANNE LLOYD

Megan in my reception class shouted: “I wanna wee.” Wanting to ensure that the children used only polite language, I said: “No, Megan. May I go to the toilet, please?” Crossing her legs and looking at me quizzically, she said:

“Can I go first?” JACKIE JONES
