Special needs training call

The General Teaching Council wants teacher training improved to cater more fully for special educational needs. The guidelines on initial training, which the Scottish Office is revising, are likely to require institutions to do more.

Following a survey of Scotland’s six teacher education institutions, the council recommends “core coverage” of special needs in all initial training. But it accepts that this basic introduction will have to be supplemented by more advanced in-service courses during teachers’ careers.
