I have brought pupils to the Glasgow Science Centre a number of times. It’s excellent. We wanted these particular kids to see the new show because they’re about to make their subject choices for certificate courses. So it would give them a flavour of the wide variety of careers open to them if they get science qualifications.
As a science teacher I would love to have some of these exhibits at my school, but many of them are too big or cost too much. There are some imaginative and effective smaller exhibits, like the time-lapse photography of a dead rabbit decomposing and disappearing into the soil, while a pile of crisp packets and drinks cans remains.
At Auchenharvie we now have quite a bit of success in sending students to university to study science. Our labs and equipment have been upgraded recently using science strategy funding from the Scottish Executive. That makes a huge difference to the kids.
