Square deal for a new school

THE authority responsible for London’s Square Mile - the nation’s financial powerhouse - this week pledged pound;2 million for a radical new school in a neighbouring borough. The Corporation of London will be the sole sponsor of a city academy in Southwark. The all-ability school, due to open by September 2003, plans to specialise in businessstudies, economics, law, finance and information technology. It will be funded with the Department for Education and Employment. Southwark Council is providing the site. The Church of England is hoping to open an Anglican city academy serving inner-city Leeds. The diocese of Ripon and Leeds wants to raise pound;1m for the project.
