Strike at four colleges

Lecturers at Dearne Valley College in Rotherham, Rotherham College of Arts and Technology, Doncaster College and the College of North West London staged two-day strikes as part of the University and College Union’s campaign to see a 2004 pay deal implemented.

The union says seven of the other 11 institutions that were targeted in the dispute have either reached agreement or are in meaningful talks over the deal, which could mean an extra Pounds 4,500 a year for a mid-ranking lecturer.

Barry Lovejoy, head of further education at the union, said: “The staff are not greedy; they are merely asking for the money they should have been paid four years ago.”

Colleges have argued that the deal, negotiated by the Association of Colleges but not binding, was too inflexible and did not take account of local circumstances.
