Striking success

Your article “Vision demands greater openness” (TES, August 4) is incorrect in that NATFHE , the lecturers’ union, has never been involved in any row at Huddersfield New College.

It is true, however, that staff were initially excluded from membership of the “corporation” but were later admitted, although this victory is largely Pyrrhic since all significant business is conducted in the sub-committees to which staff do not have access and for which minutes are not provided.

It is also true that there has been strife at Huddersfield New College, culminating in an overwhelming vote of no confidence in the principal and the chair of the corporation and a successful strike (jointly organised by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the National Union of Teachers and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers) in response to the Corporation’s attempt to impose “voluntarily” the infamous Colleges’ Employers Forum contract on the staff of this sixth-form college.
