Summer classes;News in brief

The Government has this week announced a new pound;1 million programme of 25 summer school schemes to develop art, environmental and local history projects for more than 5,000 pupils from 120 schools. David Blunkett, the Education Secretary, said the schemes would especially benefit children with special educational needs and those from ethnic minorities.

The new summer schools add to the 1,200 literacy and numeracy schemes already running but they have a wider remit ranging across art, drama, sports and gardening.
