Taking a lead on governance

14th December 2012, 12:00am

A focus on good governance is most timely and reflects an important theme in the independent sector. The recent Learning and Skills Improvement Service report (“Governors told: ‘Focus on teaching not finance’”, 7 December) applies to the governance of all kinds of schools. We consider it best practice for schools to operate an education subcommittee chaired by an expert governor such as a serving head or deputy.

Not only is this an area of focus for Sir Michael Wilshaw but the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools, the Independent Association of Prep Schools and the Cross Association Leadership initiative will be focusing on good governance this year because it is a key aspect of successful school leadership.
