Alan Howarth, the equal opportunities minister, has ordered the creation of a task force to look at the standard of careers advice offered to pupils with special needs. The move follows a damning Government report - Performance Assessment Survey: Careers Service Work with Clients with Learning Difficulties andor Disabilities - which said the careers service was failing people with special needs.

Mr Howarth said: “Careers service performance in this critical area of work is patchy. We need to address the shortcomings identified promptly.”
