Technical Ed - Skills for life on-site

Pupils at Peebles High have developed their own training centre in the school grounds where they will learn the skills and trades of a modern-day construction worker.

The training centre, built by Muir Homes with S6 pupils overseeing the project, has taken three years to plan and construct.

The building looks like an ordinary bungalow from the outside and was built in response to the lack of vocational training facilities for pupils at the school, who had to travel 45 minutes to the nearest college in Galashiels.

Now, with the launch of the Muir Homes Construction Crafts Training Centre, pupils can learn plumbing, painting, roofing and slating, carpentry, bricklaying and electrical skills on-site.

Peebles High headteacher John Brown said: “As well as assisting these pupils with leadership and enterprise skills over the past three years, the Construction Crafts Training Centre will now have a dual purpose.

“It will be used to provide apprenticeships throughout the Tweed Valley and here in the school it will be used by our pupils taking the `Skills for Work: Construction Crafts’ course in future years.”
