PRE-APPOINTMENT criminal checks of all school staff will become compulsory earlier than expected in Wales, it has been announced.

It follows reports last week that 44 school workers, mostly teachers, had not been cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau to work with children in Powys.

Education minister Jane Davidson has now pledged to bring forward legislation on March 20 to make all checks mandatory across the school workforce after the debacle.
