Too long to wait

The Assembly government has been accused of being “clueless” over the length of time a referred pupil has to wait to see an educational psychologist.

Kirsty Williams, the Liberal Democrat’s education spokesperson, voiced her concerns over the government’s apparent lack of understanding during exchanges with education minister Jane Hutt in the Senedd last week. Ms Hutt said information on waiting times was not held centrally.

But Ms Williams said: “In an age when 10 per cent of the UK’s school population has a mental health problem and childhood depression is a big concern, educational psychologists play a key role. Some children wait years to be statemented.”
