Britain could become the “new Hollywood of education”, film-maker Lord Puttnam told a conference on culture, business and society in London this week.

Educational and economic success now reinforce each other just as coal and steel reinforced each other in the first industrial revolution. “Education is the essential fuel that drives the economy, but it’s also a unique wealth-generating, employment-generating activity in its own right.

Lord Puttnam, who is a member of Labour’s creative industries taskforce, said not only did we have some of the world’s most talented computer programmers, animators, successful educational publishers, producers and broadcasters; but a huge bonus in the shape of the English language.
