Under pressure

20th June 2003, 1:00am
Aerosols first appeared in Norway in 1929. Now we use them for everything from killing fleas to helping asthmatics breathe. Three posters from the British Aerosols Manufacturers’ Association clarify matters for pupils over the age of nine. One explains their history and their world-wide spread.

Another shows the inner workings, from dip tube via gaskets to actuator.

The third uses circus performers to explore some essential scientific concepts. An elephant and a stiletto-clad trainer illustrate the relation between pressure, force and area. The same ideas are shown operating within aerosols, with pascals and newtons helpfully added to the vocabulary. For a free copy of any of the posters contact BAMA.
