Following the high level of interest in this year’s TES Schools Awards (TESSAs), organisers have extended the deadline for entries.
Heads and senior leaders interested in winning a 2011 TESSA now have an extra week to enter their school in one of the 15 categories, designed to reward excellence throughout UK education.
Speaking last month, education secretary Michael Gove urged schools to get involved. “The TES Schools Awards are a real showcase for schools involved in best practice” he said.
“It is crucial that all schools learn from those that are doing things exceptionally well, or trying out innovative ideas. If you want to shout about your achievements, and gain widespread publicity and credit for your great work, make sure you enter.”
Previous winners have also talked of the pride their school took in picking up one of the prestigious gongs. “Every time we have a school trip we take the banner with us,” said Brian Lally, deputy head of St John Plessington Catholic College, named Outstanding Secondary School last year.
“It was in Tiananmen Square in Chine, Seoul in South Korea, up to the top of the Eiffel Tower, and it has even been in the Disneyland. It was in the US over half-term for a school trip.”

There is one week left to enter this year’s TES Schools Awards, which celebrate outstanding teams in the UK state and independent sector.
The entry deadline has been extended by seven days to 5pm on 18 March. The shortlist will be announced in April and the winners at a gala lunch in July.
