Dorset Tourism has set up a VE Day Desk which produces newsletters containing stories, reminiscences and poems from veterans all over the world and details of VE Day events in Dorset. Newsletter 8, for example, describes “Operation Market Garden”, part of the Battle of Arnhem in 1944 when a tragic miscalculation caused several troops to drop by parachute into the middle of two Panzer Divisions. A Dorset regiment organised a withdrawal but not before many men had died.
