(Photograph) - Failure to spot the exact place for the “wandering tadpole” was picked up by many markers in the critical essay section of the Higher English exam.

The Scottish Qualifications Authority’s assessors have once again highlighted students’ genitive difficulties with the humble apostrophe and the possession it shows. It’s turning up when it’s not wanted and missing when it should be there.

But for some students, fine distinctions didn’t matter. “Candidates’ almost indecipherable handwriting caused problems on a number of occasions,” the assessor states.
