Wanted: pound;7m

18th November 2005, 12:00am
I am chair of governors at a London primaryjunior special school for children with learning difficulties and autism. I don’t believe that we are alone in having witnessed an increase in demand for places in excess of 100 per cent in the past 15 years.

Our premises are hopelessly inadequate. Pupils are in classrooms half the size they should be, with up to 25 per cent more pupils than recommended.

There is no more space on the site to expand. According to the LEA, no money is available to build a suitable school and central government isn’t offering capital funds in this area.

We need to find pound;7 million to rebuild. Does anyone have an answer?
