You write: “One of the chickens that was hatched by Farmer Patten’s 1993 Education Act has come home to roost.” (“Unstrategic planning”, TES, March 24). “Was hatched” not “were hatched”?
I asked only otwo people about this: my wife and another teacher. As they both agreed with your construction, I write to you and your readers for help. The situation is desperate: not only has this incident shaken my confidence in The TES as the epitome of the correct use of English, but I stand to lose 50p.
