Donald Trump, who is leading the race for the Republican presidential nomination, vowed over the weekend to scrap the Common Core State Standards in a bid to enable people to “live the American Dream”.

In a campaign video posted on his Facebook page, the property tycoon pledged to abolish the standards, which he branded as a “disaster” and claimed were being run from Washington.

The billionaire also lamented the fact that the US is ranked at number 30 in international league tables. This is despite the US, he said, being the “most expensive per pupil anywhere in the world”.

Opponents will point out that the Common Core was established by several states working together and is not run by the federal government. While, the US spends less per pupil than Switzerland, Austria, Norway and Luxembourg.

Regardless, Mr Trump declares in his video that “we have to get rid of Common Core”, adding “we have to bring education back to a local level”.
