Schools in Wales should show off their achievements on a London stage, the education minister said this week.

Jane Hutt threw her support behind the newly launched Times Educational Supplement (TES) Schools Awards for England and Wales.

She said the awards, which will be held at the Park Lane Hilton on June 9 next year, were an ideal opportunity to show off the fantastic work being done in Wales’s schools to colleagues over the border.

She said: “I am delighted to offer my support for the first TES Schools Awards for England and Wales. The guiding principle of these awards is that schools work as communities, not in isolation and is a celebration of team working.”

Ms Hutt says she will attend the ceremony, but any winning Welsh schools would have their own post-awards celebration at the Senedd.

Ed Balls, England’s schools secretary, has also pledged his support for the competition.

The TES launched its first ever official awards ceremony for England and Wales in recognition of school teamwork last month. Gerard Kelly, editor of The TES, said no event had so far recognised the achievements of individual schools. There are 16 awards, including primary school of the year, secondary school of the year and the best school dinners awards.

The competition is open from November 24 until February 20. The shortlist will be announced next May. All school finalists will receive free places for staff to attend the lunch. Visit www.tes.co.uk for more information and entry details.
