SCOTLAND has not done as well as it might in maths, Lindsay Logan, professor of mathematical education at the Northern College in Dundee, says.
“When you take a cold look at it, we should be doing better and we can begin in the primary school,” Professor Logan said. “We need direct, interactive teaching and the best resource is the teacher.”
is assessment, based on the Assessment of Achievement Programme, is that Scottish pupils are good at shape, information handling and problem-solving but less strong on mental calculation and numeracy.
“We need more emphasis on numeracy at all levels in primary and secondary and less dependence on calculators,” he told The TES Scotland.
