Security has to be tight to cope with the pupils, never mind intruders. In one Glasgow primary, key pads with numbers known only to staff were installed. But the arrival of playground huts meant that pupils making a desperate journey to the toilets in the main building had to be issued with the secret codes, which were then a secret no more.

A member of staff said: “We may not be secure any more but the auxiliary’s supply of dry pants doesn’t get used up so quickly.”
