One of the kenspeckle figures at the North Kelvinside meeting last week to protest at the closure of the secondary school was Jock Morris. He introduced himself as a “Hillhead High School parent” but older hands recognised him as the veteran Socialist Workers’ Party campaigner and scourge of the Educational Institute of Scotland leadership at annual conferences.

Morris did, to be fair, eventually reveal his SWP affiliation, although it barely needed revealing as he denounced all and sundry from Glasgow director Ken Corsar to Chancellor Gordon Brown. But the mystery was why he had to come to the meeting as an outsider “in solidarity”. How, as a resident in North Kelvinside’s catchment, does he end up as a Hillhead parent? Clearly one of the travelling people.
