When things get tricky

A new campaign has been launched to stress to youngsters the importance of the use of languages in the workplace.

In response to Lord Dearing’s report on the case for learning languages, The Languages Work have created a host of resources for students aged 14 to 19.

Posters and postcards show how “Things can get tricky when people can’t communicate” in various employment sectors. There are also activities for independent study in class or for homework.

Isabella Moore, director of the National Centre for Languages, said: “The need for languages in the workplace is changing rapidly as our economy becomes more international and it is important that we highlight these changes for young people as they make their career choices.”

Materials can be obtained via the Languages Work website www.languageswork.org.uk, which also has further details of the specialised Diplomas.
